Outside The British Museum / Watercolour unframed. The British museum has been more or less a home for me all my life. Starting with my first visit at the age of 5… I was enthralled by its scale and mystified by its contents. Its been a learning and resource center and a place to just take me away from the hub bub of London streets. I started drawing there at about the age of 11, when my pocket money would take me on a red bus for about 3 shillings. Of course the Greeks, Romans and Egyptian artefacts were first sketches then I moved on to Mosaics and Easter island statues. I became a Student of The Slade school of Fine Art at the top of Gower street in 1970 and then of course the BM was a sanctuary and place of study. On a recent visit in 2026 it was nice to see the Grand and spacious entrance giving way to a cafe where refreshing coffee and cold drinks and snacks are available for visitors under big Blue Umbrellas … I just had to paint this. Well done BM.
